Camino de Santiago from Lourdes: the Voie du Piemont Pyreneen (GR78)
Pilgrim stage on the Voie du Piemont — accommodation, credencial stamp, tips for pilgrims and hikers
Lourdes on the GR78: the Piemont Pyreneen Way to Santiago
The Voie du Piemont Pyreneen (GR78) is one of the 4 historic French Ways of Saint James, leading pilgrims from Carcassonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Spanish-Pyrenees gateway) along the Pyrenees foothills over about 530 km. Lourdes is a major stage, around 320 km from the start and 210 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
This route is less known and less crowded than the Via Tolosana (GR653) or the Le Puy Way (GR65), making it ideal for pilgrims seeking peace, nature and authentic spirituality. GR78 markings are red-white, sometimes paired with the yellow Saint James scallop shell.
On the GR78, Lourdes has a dual spiritual value: pilgrim stage to Santiago AND major Marian pilgrimage site (3 million visitors per year). Many pilgrims en route to Santiago make a 1-2 day spiritual halt in Lourdes to visit the Sanctuary before resuming their walk.
Pilgrim profile on the GR78: 70% independent (autonomous walk, gite or hotel), 20% with luggage transfer service (La Malle Postale and similar), 10-15% in organised group with specialised tour operators.
Typical stage distance: 20-25 km per day. Moderate elevation on most of the route, steeper in the Pyrenees towards Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
