• 8.30 am: Sanctuary and Grotto of Massabielle (1 h). Early in the morning it is quieter.

Stage 1 — Notre-Dame Sanctuary: Grotto, basilicas, processions

Entry to the Sanctuary is free. It is the soul of Lourdes: come early in the morning to enjoy the calm before the groups arrive. The domain closes at night (6 am to 1 am from April to early November 2026, according to the tourist office).

The Grotto of Massabielle: this is where Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary 18 times between 11 February and 16 July 1858. You will see the statue of the Virgin in the niche, the spring and candles burning day and night. Near the Grotto, the spring water flows from taps where you can fill a bottle free of charge.

The basilicas: the Immaculate Conception (consecrated in 1876), Our Lady of the Rosary (consecrated in 1901) and the underground Basilica of St Pius X (1958), which can hold 20,000 people. Free entry. Allow about 1 hour.

The processions (not to be missed): Eucharistic procession every day at 5 pm; Marian torchlight procession at 9 pm, April to October. Sometimes several thousand pilgrims move up the esplanade singing the Ave Maria, candle in hand.

The baths: from April to October, pilgrims who wish can take part in the immersion bath. Check the times on site.

Stages 2 & 3 — Castle, old town, Pic du Jer, restaurants

The castle and the Pyrenean Museum (1 h 30): the medieval castle overlooks the old town and offers views of Lourdes, the Pyrenees and the Sanctuary. Access is by lift. It houses the Pyrenean Museum, devoted to the history and traditions of the mountains. Adult ticket: €8; €4 for ages 6-17 and students. From April to September, open daily 9 am to 5 pm.

The old town (30 min): on the way down from the castle, wander through the town-centre streets, rue du Bourg and rue de la Grotte (our street!), which leads down to the Sanctuary.

The Pic du Jer by funicular (1 h 30): opened in 1900, the funicular climbs towards the summit (948 m) in a few minutes. 360° views over Lourdes and the Pyrenees, as far as the Pic du Midi on a clear day. 2026 season: 27 March to 1 November; full fare from €14.50, reduced fare from €11. At the top: trails and a bike park that hosted the UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2022).

Where to eat: for a quick lunch, the brasseries, crêperies and bakeries in the town centre, or the Café Jeanne d'Arc (rue de la Grotte, with a terrace). For a local dinner: Le Magret (rue des Quatre-Frères-Soulas, South-West cuisine), or any restaurant serving Pyrenean specialities: garbure, duck breast, local lamb.

Practical tips and FAQ for visiting Lourdes in 1 day

When to come? From April to October, the Sanctuary lives to the rhythm of daily processions and the weather is milder. The major feasts (11 February, 15 August) and the summer draw the biggest crowds: book your accommodation early. In winter the atmosphere is more intimate, and the ski resorts in the nearby valleys are within a day trip (see our skiing page).

How to get there? By train: direct TGV trains link Paris-Montparnasse with Lourdes in about 5 hours. By air: Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées airport is 10 km away. By car: A64, exit 12 Tarbes-Ouest, then the RN21.

Budget for one day: Sanctuary free; castle and Pyrenean Museum €8 (adult); Pic du Jer funicular from €14.50 (2026 full fare). Add your meals.

FAQ. Is one day enough? For the essentials, yes, but you will miss the evening procession. Ideal: one night on site, i.e. two days. Do I need to be a believer? No, the Sanctuary is open to everyone. Do I need to book for the Sanctuary? No, access is free. Does the funicular run all year? No: in 2026 it is open from 27 March to 1 November.
